Director of the BSc Degree Programmes in Applied Biological Sciences (2016 -present) and in Cell Biology (2020 - present)

I undertook the direction of the Applied Biological Sciences (ABS) degree in January 2016 – one year after being appointed as a lecturer at UoS. This role involved significant leadership and managerial responsibilities, as it was one of the four new integrated degree programmes between the UoS and Forth Valley College, with several modules being designed from scratch in 2016 and a placement module in partnership with 15 Scottish Life Science Industries. More recently - since Spring 2020 - I also act as Programme Director of the Cell Biology degree, that will benefit from my experience in leading the ABS degree over the past 8 years.

As the Director of two BSc. Degree Programmes, I serve as the academic leader and my role encompasses a range of responsibilities vital to the success and growth of our students and the programme itself.

Curriculum Oversight & Programme Development: I meticulously design, review, and refine the curriculum, ensuring it remains relevant, up-to-date, and aligned with academic standards. I continually seek opportunities for improvement and innovation in our educational offerings.  I identify emerging trends and opportunities within our field of study, exploring ways to enhance our programmes and adapt to evolving educational landscapes.

Admissions, Recruitment - Public events/ Open days: I actively engage in student recruitment efforts, attracting talented individuals to our BSc. programme. I also contribute to the admissions process, selecting candidates who demonstrate the potential for academic excellence at UoS.

Student Guidance: I am here to guide and support our students throughout their academic journey. Whether it's selecting courses, addressing concerns, or providing academic advice, I strive to empower our students to achieve their full potential.

Student Success: & Quality Assurance: Maintaining the highest standards of education is a priority. I monitor programme outcomes, and ensure that our students receive a top-notch education that prepares them for success. Ultimately, my role is dedicated to the success and well-being of our BSc. students. I strive to create an environment where they can excel academically, grow personally, and help them find their career paths.

Module Coordinator

As the Module Coordinator, I play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective delivery and organisation of specific academic modules. This role combines administrative expertise with a deep commitment to fostering a dynamic and enriching learning environment, with innovative tools and a diversity of teaching activities and courseworks.

  • Module coordinator of the Lab Skills Module - SCIU3LS (2nd year BSc students; ~220 students)

  • Module coordinator of Molecular Techniques Module - BIOU9TM (4th year BSc students, ~30 students)

Personal Tutor

As a Personal Tutor, I serve as a dedicated mentor and guide students, providing them with individualised support and fostering their personal and academic growth. This role is essential in helping students navigate their educational journey effectively.

Academic Guidance: I work closely with each student to chart their academic path, offering tailored advice on course selection, study strategies, and academic goals. I help students set and achieve their academic aspirations.

Mentorship and Support: My role extends beyond academics to include personal and professional development. I serve as a trusted confidant, offering guidance on career choices, time management, and personal challenges that may arise during their time at UoS.

Goal Setting: Together with students, I establish clear academic and personal goals. I provide ongoing support and accountability to help them stay on track and reach their desired outcomes.

Monitoring Progress: Regularly monitoring students' progress is essential. I assess their academic performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement strategies to address any challenges.

Problem Solving: I assist students in solving academic or personal challenges they may encounter, offering guidance and solutions to help them overcome obstacles.

Wellness and Well-being: The well-being of students is a priority. I am attentive to their emotional and mental health, providing a supportive and empathetic presence during stressful times.
